A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Token Economy on Development of Self-Care Skills among Mild Intellectually Disabled Children at a Selected Centre in Coimbatore

This quantitative, pre-experimental study investigated the effectiveness of a token economy system in enhancing self-care skills among 60 mild intellectually disabled children, residing in a rehabilitation center in Coimbatore.

Over the course of seven individualized therapy sessions, each lasting 20 minutes, the token economy was implemented as a motivational strategy to reinforce daily living tasks. The intervention was followed by a posttest using the same scale.

Data analysis revealed a significant improvement in self-care skills after the intervention (t = 13.883, p < 0.05), affirming the positive impact of behavioral reinforcement on functional independence in children with intellectual disabilities.

This research underscores the practical value of token economy techniques in pediatric psychiatric and rehabilitative settings, offering strong implications for nursing practice, education, and administration.
